Sometimes meals don’t feel hard because there’s nothing to eat.

They feel hard because there’s too much to sort through all at once.

What sounds good, what’s fast, what’s actually here, what takes the least effort, and whether anyone else will eat it can all hit at the same time.

That’s why I’d make the task smaller instead of bigger:

3 default dinners
2 lunches you can repeat
1 breakfast that happens on autopilot

A lot of meal planning fails for a very specific reason: it’s built for a high-capacity version of you.

A plan that sounds reasonable when you’re calm on a Sunday morning can completely fall apart at 5:30 p.m. when your brain is tired, your body is hungry, and life is being life.

That’s why planning in versions matters. High-capacity, medium-capacity, and low-capacity meals reduce the chance that dinner depends on perfect timing, perfect energy, or a perfect mood.

We have to notice hunger, stop what we’re doing, switch gears, remember what’s available, decide what fits the moment, estimate effort, think about cleanup, and often carry other people’s needs too.
So when someone says, “Just make something,” they’re talking about the end result as if the invisible work before it doesn’t exist.

But that invisible work is the whole thing.

What helps is not pushing harder.

We focus so much on what kids eat, more greens, less sugar, better snacks, but not enough on how they eat.

Because learning how to eat candy is really learning how to eat all foods.

It’s about learning that food isn’t good or bad.

That pleasure and nourishment can exist in the same bite.
That listening to your body matters more than following food rules.

When kids aren’t taught how to eat candy, they often grow up unsure how to trust themselves with food at all. That uncertainty can turn into all-or-nothing thinking, emotional eating, or an endless cycle of guilt and control.

Over time, those patterns can harden into disordered eating or even addiction-like relationships with food. What starts as “good choices” can quietly become fear-based control, and kids lose their ability to eat from awareness instead of anxiety.

This is how disordered eating begins, not from a lack of vegetables, but from a lack of trust.

Teaching kids how to eat candy means showing them how to slow down, taste, listen, and stop when their body says enough. It’s how we raise kids who can sit at a table and feel calm around all foods, not just the ones labelled “healthy.”

That’s real nourishment.

Three ways to start:

1. Pair candy with protein or fat. It helps steady energy and teaches kids that food balance doesn’t have to be rigid.

2. Drop the “good or bad” and “junk or healthy” language. “Healthy” might as well be a swear word in our house. All food is food.

3. Model calm curiosity. Eat some candy with them, talk about what it tastes like, and let it be normal. When food isn’t charged, it becomes just food.

What if the real danger this Halloween isn’t candy, but the guilt we pass down about it?

Maybe sugar isn’t the problem, but the fear and shame we attach to it can quietly shape how kids feel about food, their bodies, and trust.

It often sounds like this:
– “I don’t eat sugar.”
– “You’ve had enough, haven’t you?”
– “I’m being good today.”
– “That stuff is poison.”

To a child, those comments don’t just describe food. They teach what’s safe, what’s off-limits, and when pleasure has to be earned.

Here’s what helps instead:

1. Stay neutral
Avoid “junk food” or “healthy food.” When kids hear some foods are “good” and others are “bad,” they learn to judge themselves by what they eat. Talk instead about how foods help the body.

2. Let candy be part of the experience
Restriction makes it more powerful. When candy is allowed and enjoyed openly, it loses its charge. Our family keeps it in a bowl on the kitchen table because accessibility removes the power of restriction.

3. Model calm
Eat a few pieces with them. No commentary, no guilt. Kids learn more from what we do than what we say.

4. Pair with protein
Candy with nuts, cheese, or milk slows the sugar spike, steadies energy, and prevents the crash.

5. Create rhythm, not rules
Help kids plan when candy fits. Even with breakfast! Pair with meals and snacks so blood sugar stays steadier.

6. Trust them
If they overdo it, that’s part of learning. Ask, “How’s your tummy feeling right now?” Kids build self-regulation through experience, not control.

When kids feel safe around food, they learn to trust their bodies instead of doubting them. That’s the real goal: not less candy, but less shame.

Hacks. Habits. Tools. Tips.

But for me, this is what’s being left out:

If your brain is running on caffeine, cortisol and survival mode…those tools won’t stick.

Because you can’t regulate a body that isn’t resourced.

You can’t rewire anything if your nervous system is inflamed, your digestion is impaired, and your meals don’t meet your needs.

This isn’t about trying harder.

It’s about giving your system what it needs to actually support change.

Also a bit of a side note from a coffee-loving functional nutritionist and ADHD coach: I’m not anti-coffee. I love coffee.

Coffee has antioxidant properties, supports dopamine, and for many ADHDers, it’s a sensory ritual that works.

AND I use it to add things like creatine, protein, collagen and electrolytes…

But if it’s the only thing you’re having in the morning…

That’s not regulation. That’s a circadian rhythm crisis.

You don’t need to quit coffee.

You need to eat with it.

Mental health support that ignores blood sugar, nutrient status, digestion, and executive functioning isn’t support.

It’s pressure.

And that’s where I come in.

It’s the body and brain reacting to an environment that’s working against them.

And I hate even separating those two - brain and body - because they’re NOT separate. It’s all the SAME system.

That’s not dysfunction.

That’s a body asking for regulation.

Chunking worksheets and extra time get called “accommodations” all the time.

And yes, sometimes they work for some brains, but, they don’t actually change the experience for the child.

They just layer on more pressure.

Real accommodations remove friction.

They shift the environment so the brain can access the task without burning out.

When something keeps breaking down, the question isn’t “Why can’t they just do it?”

The real question is “What part of the setup is making this harder than it needs to be?”

Sometimes it’s noise. Sometimes it’s timing. Sometimes it’s too many instructions at once. Sometimes it’s because they watch their friends finishing faster than they do (oh, this is my sweet kiddo)

The fix is in the environment, not in forcing more effort.

Because the problem was never effort.

It was always the mismatch between the brain and the environment.

Trying harder isn’t the answer.

Let’s stop pretending ADHD means you just need to try harder at consistency.

You built a system.

You tried it.

Your brain gave feedback.

That’s data, not failure.

And if it stopped working after three days, guess what? That IS the system working!

The problem isn’t your follow-through. It’s the way we romanticize routines as moral achievements.

“Wake up. Meditate. Journal. Cold plunge. Protein smoothie. Gratitude list. Inbox zero. Treadmill.”

That’s not a routine. That’s a job. And you’re already working overtime just existing in this world.

For ADHD brains, real systems are:
• Rhythmic, not rigid
• Designed to evolve, not impress
• Built to honour your energy, not bypass it

So here’s your “routine” now:
- Try things
- Notice when they break
- Adjust without shame
- Build again, knowing it’s never final

That’s not failure. That’s adaptive design.

I was in a store today and overheard one woman say to another, “Do you feel better now that you know it’s IBS?”

I had to take a deep breath and not launch into my functional nutritionist and ADHD coach rant.

Because being told you have IBS can feel like relief in the moment. But it doesn’t explain why you are still bloated after meals, running to the bathroom with urgency, doubled over with cramps, or afraid to eat certain foods because you never know how your gut will react.

IBS is a placeholder. It means the scary stuff has been ruled out, but no one has explored the real reasons your digestion feels unpredictable.

It doesn’t tell you whether your pain and bloating are coming from low stomach acid, microbial imbalance or SIBO, food intolerances, cortisol and stress hormones, or thyroid shifts.

So yes, sometimes it helps to hear “it’s IBS” because at least you know it’s not Crohn’s, cancer, or something life-threatening. But relief is not the same as answers.

Many of my ADHD clients arrive with an IBS label, and it makes sense. ADHD and gut issues often travel together.

The same nervous system patterns that affect focus and energy also impact digestion, motility, and how stress shows up in the gut.

Underneath the IBS label, we usually find real, workable root causes that can be supported in practical ways.

If you have been told “it’s IBS,” you are not stuck with it.

Your symptoms are real, and your story is not finished yet.
